Man Gives Teen Cocaine & Marijuana
A Clymer man has been accused of furnishing cocaine to a 12-year-old boy and later sharing marijuana with the youth while the boy was on a home visit from a residential treatment facility.
Michael Byers, 34, of 390 Franklin St., was charged by state police on July 11 with two counts each of reckless endangerment and corruption of minors.
Findings from Court Papers
According to court papers, the youth stayed out all night Feb. 25 and refused to go to school after coming home at 5:30 a.m. The boy's mother summoned an ambulance to take him to Indiana Regional Medical Center, where a urine test showed he had used cocaine and marijuana.
The boy told his mother that Byers had given him the drugs.
Court papers also show the boy's mother found a water pipe used for smoking marijuana in the mailbox at her home on May 13, while her son was home for a weekend from Kids Count, a residential treatment center (mental-health and substance-abuse) in Butler.
The boy, who had turned 13, told his mother that Byers had given him the pipe and smoked marijuana with him the day before - all according to information that the mother gave to state police on May 14.
The boy corroborated the stories on May 16 when troopers interviewed him at Kids Count, but in an interview on June 30, Byers denied that he gave the boy any drugs.
Troopers did not report why the youth was being treated at Kids Count.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 11. (194-2007)
