What do Therapeutic Boarding Schools for Troubled Teens Offer?
A therapeutic boarding school offers 24-hour care, varied levels of therapy, education, and a structured environment. Therapeutic boarding schools are usually a long-term placement with placement period of 12-18 months. The enlightening environment of therapeutic boarding schools offers an opporunity for adolescents to recognize and work through behaviors, attitudes and addictions that may have occured with a troubled teen in the past. Troubled teens are usually placed in therapeutic boarding schools with problems such as failing in school, mild drug abuse, defiant behavior, running away, depression, manipulation, low self-esteem, and general rebellion to name a few. Some boarding schools may choose to specialize in one category or another. Most programs will not accept troubled teens with a history of violence.
Treatment within Therapeutic Boarding Schools
Treatment within therapeutic boarding schools varies and may include group therapy, individual therapy, etc.. All therapeutic boarding schools offer teens a chance to help identify and resolve issues underlying troubled teen behavior. Boarding schools may also base treatment on a positive peer culture environment, in which teens hold other teens accountable for their behaviors. It is best to inquire when searching for a program to know what types of therapy are offered. It is also a good idea to ask parents that have participated in any given program what their feelings are about the type of treatment offered-asking is always helpful, especially if you are in the same boat as the hundreds of other parents- looking at treatment options for the first time.
Are Therapeutic Boarding Schools right for My Troubled Teen?
Therapeutic boarding schools are aimed towards students who are having difficulty at home or in a traditional school setting. While preparing students for college can also be a goal for these schools, these schools are equipped to handle students who are facing challenges such as behavioral / emotional problems, substance abuse, or significant learning differences. Therapeutic boarding schools offer academic programs that can help teens catch up on credits. Many teens have shown the ability to jump a grades in a single semester. They offer counseling and extracurricular activities that help the teen develop self-esteem and learn how their behavior and decisions impact their lives. These schools allow focused attention on your teen's emotional, behavioral, and academic problems in a safe environment. With large staff to student ratios (1:5 to 1:10 depending on the facility), a struggling teen can get individual attention. These therapeutic boarding schools offer individualized education plans that recognize your child's strengths and learning style.
Good to note:
- Therapeutic Boarding Schools are usually licensed for treatment within their respective states and are required to renew that license on an annual basis.
- Educational consultants frequently recommend a therapeutic boarding school as a follow to therapy begun in a wilderness program.
- Insurance may help cover a portion of program costs. This portion varies from provider to provider and program to program, but is usually small.
- Many programs may be nationally affiliated with great organizations such as NATSAP (national association of therapeutic schools and programs).
