Residential Treatment

Different Types of Residential Treatment

Residential treatment describes several different types of programs designed to help troubled teens. Residential treatment facilities house clients at or near their facility in order to help maximize treatment effectiveness. Therapeutic boarding schools, military schools/teen boot camps, and residential treatment centers all fit into this category. It is also important to note, that many different residential treatment centers have chosen to specialize in one area or another within these three types of programs.

Which Type of Residential Treatment is Right for my Teen?

While there may be more than one right answer to the question above, the issues that your teen is experiencing should be an indicator of the type of residential treatment you should seek. Following is a description of the types of residential treatment, as well as an indication of teens that may be best suited in each one.

Residential Treatment Options: Therapeutic Boarding Schools

Therapeutic boarding schools are designed to help teens with a wide array of issues, though a special emphasis is placed on academics. This type of residential treatment may be an excellent option for students who have learning disabilities such as ADHD, or whose behavioral issues have caused their academic progress to falter.

Residential Treatment Options: Military Schools

Military schools are designed to take a tough love approach to correcting poor teen behavior. An emphasis is usually placed on structure and discipline. This type of residential treatment may be a good option for troubled teens struggling with issues such as defiance and entitlement. In many cases this type of residential treatment is most successful when teens already have a good understanding of the cause and effect type relationships. It may not be a good option for teens who do not understand the relationship between actions and consequences.

Residential Treatment Options: Residential Treatment Centers

Residential Treatment centers are designed to reach a balance between structure and academics to help teens with a wide variety of issues. This type of residential treatment may be a good option for teens who struggle with a wide variety or a combination of several issues. Many residential treatment centers are equipped to help teens both emotionally and academically. Specialized Residential Treatment

Some residential treatment centers choose to specialize in one area or another. Following is a list of the most common types of specialization. Addiction treatment, clinical, Christian, eating disorders, family treatment, girls, boys, or sexual issues. If you feel that your teen has a very specific set of issues, then it may be a good idea to look into a more specialized form of residential treatment for troubled teens.
